Music Box Children's Charity

MusicBox believes that a musical education should not be a privilege limited to those who can afford it. Music is an integral part of a child’s early development, with long-lasting benefits. We have thus set out to provide all children, regardless of financial, social or physical circumstances, equal opportunities for growth and development.

MusicBox Children’s Charity brings music education to vulnerable children in Canada, fostering creativity and a love of music, making arts education more accessible, and promoting the development of holistically healthy children.

MusicBox offers FREE music education programming for children ages 2 - 15 from vulnerable communities in various community centres around the city.

Program Highlights

At MusicBox, we pride ourselves on facilitating programs that respond to the needs of the participants and volunteers. Based on the skills and interests of the participants, we offer a variety of exciting and informative programs.

Some of the programs MusicBox has implemented include:

Allegro! Early Childhood Education (ECE) (Ages 2-5)

In partnership with University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, this program is based on movement and music and offers children ages 2-5 an opportunity to improve on all domains of physical and intellectual development. Run by UBC medical school students, Allegro also incorporates early indicators of child development and health and tracks the progress of emotional, intellectual and physical growth. The program is also taking place in Edmonton.

Private Instrument Lessons (Age 5 and over)

These private or semi-private lessons pair highly-motivated students with an instructor to offer advanced techniques in instrumental music. Past class offerings have included piano and guitar. Classes build on foundation skills and offer the benefits of structured instruction in a one-to-one or two-to-one format. MusicBox is happy to offer other instrumental classes as well, depending on interest and the skills of our volunteers.

World Music Appreciation Classes (Ages 6-10)

Group classes introduce children to the basics of music like rhythm, meter, and beat. Music from around the globe is introduced to help the class explore the basics while fostering tolerance, acceptance and appreciation of multiculturalism. Class sizes are typically 10-15 students, with a ratio of 5 students to 1 teacher.

Drumming Circles (Age 6 and over)

This after-school program is geared toward children aged 6 and over. A highly interactive, fun and engaging class, drumming circle introduces children to rhythm and percussion. Working with groups of 10-15 children, this program teaches collaborative music in a fun and high energy environment.

MusicBox Children’s Choir (Age 8 and over)

Vocally-trained volunteers meet with the choir students weekly to rehearse songs from a variety of composers and genres. The choir encourages discipline and confidence, while advancing knowledge of music theory and vocal technique. The children’s choir also participates in performances.
