Little Voices, Dancing Feet with Jodie Friesen

Group music & movement classes for babies, toddlers & young children, with a qualified, experienced, and enthusiastic teacher.

General Program / Class Information

  • “WIGGLERS” (Babies): We’ll learn songs and rhymes for fingers , toes & belly buttons, dressing, bouncing, swinging, tickling, and peek-a-boo. A wide variety of instruments are there for them to explore orally, as well as aurally ;) Scarves, puppets, and little dances for two heighten the enjoyment, until lullaby time brings everything to a soothing close.
  • “WANDERERS” (Toddlers): We try to keep pace with their boundless energy with bouncing, clapping, swinging, tickling & peek-a-boo songs, as well as finding noses & toes! They’ll explore a wide variety of instruments from around the world, plus scarves to dance with, and puppets that go “moo”. But even they need a lullaby now and then!
  • “MOVERS & SHAKERS”: Now we add in songs & rhymes for budding imaginations, and finger plays for increased fine motor skills towards the day they may want to play more complex instruments. They're getting bigger, so it's getting harder to put beat into their bodies by bouncing them on our laps, but they still love it, so maybe just a little bit ;) They’ll explore a wealth of global instruments, as well as scarves, musical books, and puppets, until it’s time to rock a Teddy to sleep.
  • "FIRST ADVENTURES IN DANCE": “I CAN DANCE A RAINBOW”: Scarves, hoops, puppets, balloons, streamers, feathers, instruments & more, have them exercising their bodies and imaginations to a wide variety of music, while learning the first elements of dance. In the Fall term, the dances will be tied together by a different colour each week. (Grownups get to stay and participate, too!) (Note: there is no fee for younger siblings to attend this class, as long as they are safely confined to a baby carrier or car seat).
  • “MUSIC MAKERS”: The focus is on developing greater musical independence, confidence, & imaginative play, while building on beat & vocal skills, discovering rhythms, and having fun! Creative movement will be incorporated. (Children stay on their own when they are ready).
  • “FAMILY MUSIC” ~ all ages There’s no age limit; all that’s needed is an interest in having fun making music together! Families and caregivers with just one child are welcome, too.
  • “RHYTHMATICS” ~ JK & SK We’ll have fun with beat, pitch, rhythm & dynamics, while playing singing games, creating sound effects for stories and poems, and improvising with xylophones & multi-cultural percussion instruments. Musical literacy will be introduced. (This is a "drop-off" program).
  • “KODORFF” ~ Grades 1 - 3 “Kodaly” & “Orff” teaching methods are combined, so learning music is a vibrant and active. First the music is experienced physically, with body percussion, movement, and interactive singing games, then it is transferred to xylophones and a wide variety of multi-cultural percussion instruments (drums, shakers, chimes, rhythm sticks, bells, cymbals, gongs, rainsticks, etc.) . We’ll also create soundscapes for stories & poems. Beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics and form will all be addressed, and they'll begin learning the basics of reading and writing music.
